Lajolla: the Beverly Hills of San Diego

With its panoramic ocean view, ranging palms and perfect weather, La Jolla is like Hawaii without five hours flight.This was decades ago and who had just returned from our first real long-distance travel an unforgettable experience, you open the eyes trip to Hawaii that exposed a couple of soggy Pacific Northwest university students in bright sunlight and warm salt water that did not even know existed. The same next month we are taking a vacation in Southern California when he arrived in La Jolla and is, as Yogi would say, d? vu all over again.To make sure the water in Southern California was beautiful than it was hot. And there were too many native Hawaiians from Hawaii, but does not seem to be many either. What La Jolla made the views and sunlight shining, and it was determined that someday we could go back and live there.We did eventually live and work there, if only for a short time, and especially the east coast delivered on all its promises refuge. The "Village", as called Girard Avenue and the community that surrounds it, is a gourmet blend of spices that make life so enjoyable fine dining, world-class shopping, countless outdoor activities, surfing, sand, incredible views and, of course, almost constant sunshine.Nowadays, local values of origin have a price of the average mortal, and if there is living, whether you've done very well for yourself or had the good fortune to grow in a local family who bought real estate when local land prices were reasonable probably sometime shortly after statehood. But there are two groups of people living temporarily at the Villa: tenants and tourists. Tenants plunk down several thousand each month for the barest of excavations; tourists stay only briefly, but much more economically.Which is why that big to be a tourist in La Jolla. With a selection of tasteful several hotels and resorts and, yes, some are quite reasonably priced visitors can pretend that we are living the lifestyle for a few days and still return home with money in their pockets.It all starts with watching the parade of people on Gerard Avenue. Plan to have a gourmet sandwich down to one of several cafes and then plop you were stranded on a table. At the forefront is a parade of some 20 dresses bomb in a spaghetti-strapped halter and capris, dragging over a period of five inches poodle that is decidedly disinterested to be part of this parade. Next: 30-something clean-cut Logger boy wearing boots until their ankles, his pants in Squish the tops boot, and his long-sleeved shirt rather by his belt buckle. Must be new La Jolla fashion because his style as 20-something model-girlfriend does not seem the least bit embarrassed to walk beside him. After over two comes some 30 men, dressed in almost identical turtlenecks, jackets sporting faces and nuances, certainly in the sweltering midday sun but cool in their own minds. And everyone is at lunch, making it almost worth the nine dollars is the cost to the sandwich.You could even see celebrities in this neck of the woods. We have come to Geena Davis and his sons some time, while the beautiful people, including Cindy Crawford bought houses in the village. Barbra Streisand says that bought her wedding ring in Bowers Jewelers. The movie filming and television are common and long series Silk Stalkings uses the local landscape quite frequently to describe the glitzy glamour of southern California.Walk Gerard down a little ways and it seems that there is much temptation to carry out his card credit. There are specialty shops as Rangoni shoes, art galleries as Cosmopolitan Fine Art and Images of Nature, and then more typical "mall" stores like Banana Republic and Gap. The side streets have their own deals, many of them related to health, fitness and well-being, even if you need a bit of plastic surgery that well.Gerard is one of two main streets in the village. Also famous for its stores is Prospect Avenue, which also has a lot of hip boutiques and restaurants popular. Check out George's for spectacular views of the ocean and award-winning cuisine. Brockton Villa's another right next to Prospect that looks like a perennial favorite. A Caesar salad on deck outdoors in Moondoggie's may be a relatively cheap and refreshing pause as the breeze from the coast to find their way to this part of the business district. Only traces of Scripps Park are outdoor cafes such as Cody's, the French and West Fay's Gourmet Seafood.Scripps Park is actually just a block down the main shopping district, and, however, is anything less commercial. You might find an ecology Jersey standing but everything is green lawns and meandering paths that attract friends, lovers and families to stroll along one of the most picturesque in all the coasts of California. The coast is rocky and jagged in places at the same time offering up the beach just enough to expose their beach towels to some privacy. Walk about 10 minutes south and you'll find La Jolla Cove where you can see the seals sun themselves on a local scenic beach.Skirting the eastern edge of Scripps Park is a scenic road that is often used as a bicycle route between La Jolla and more tourist beach town of Playa del Pacific. The trip takes you through beautiful neighborhoods never far away from sea views and through the fascinating city of Birdrock. It also is artistic and fashion, but perhaps by a notch in price.La Jolla Shores is just north of the city and offers a mile long beach where locals and tourists congregate for outdoor activities. Nearby are the faces of households in La Jolla Shores area, as well as some hotels and a small shopping district.Nearby is a marine preserve what is common to see divers for the preparation of its sessions dive into the depths . If you do not dive, you will find other ways of approaching the sea, such as paddling a kayak in an area near what is known as the Caves of La Jolla. Or you can go down to the caves to visit the Cave of La Jolla and Shell Shop, where there is a 145-step gateway to the Sunny Jim Cave, the largest of these grottoes.Another favorite beach is the Birch Aquarium, a popular place to families to take a close look at sea life such as coral reefs, tide pools and even sharks. The aquarium has a 70000-gallon tank in which many sea creatures are in display.If you simply want to drive around the area, the spectacular homes make it worthwhile. One unit is especially gratifying to head up the street Nautilus for the higher elevations of the city where the Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross is dedicated to veterans of two world wars and the Korean War. While there has been a political tug of war about whether the cross would remain, the views of this part of La Jolla offer one of the best ways to see the topography of the entire San Diego County area.AT GLANCEWHERE A: La Jolla has often called "the Beverly Hills of San Diego and is about 15 minutes drive north of downtown. Several of the best hotels in San Diego are here, so this is an excellent base of operations for a vacation.WHAT Southern California: A coastal town that offers some of the best shops, restaurants and ocean views of throughout the San Diego area. Spa vacations are great here, and there is a good choice of spas and facilities in area.WHEN: All year.
