Berlin: Capital of Modern Germany

Berlin is the capital of Germany and was built around the River Spree. Berlin was founded in 1237, but most of the city was destroyed during the Second World War. Recently, the city has undergone a massive reconstruction and rejuvenation project and it is now a thriving modern city. Today, Berlin is one of the most visited cities in Europe, with about 6 million per year visitors.There are many attractions for visitors to Berlin. It has an interesting mix of old and new. Berlin has some of the most advanced modern architecture in the world today, but also a relic of the era past. Tourists should be sure to visit Checkpoint Charlie which is the checkpoint where foreigners rose from East to West Germany. The remains of the Berlin wall which was destroyed in 1989 can be considered at this stage. Otherwise, visit the Berlin Wall Memorial that will give you a real sense of life with the Berlin Wall. The highest structure of the city is the Tour de Fernsehturm television and it boasts a revolving restaurant at the top. If you want to see some of the hectic life in Berlin, be sure to go through the Potsdamer Plaza which is one of the busiest places in Europe. Here you will find a number of bars, restaurants, shops, cafes and entertainment venues. This place is also the State Library, Museum of Fine Arts and the Philharmonic concert hall. Also passing the Reichstag, which houses the German Parliament.Museum island deserves a visit. It is home to five museums renowned Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode Museum, Neues Museum (which includes the Egyptian Museum and the Museum of pre-and early history) and the Pergamon Museum (which includes the Museum of Islamic Art and Museum Near East). There are also many other galleries in Berlin, where you can see the old and modern sculptures and paintings by artists like Van Gogh, Cezanne and Picasso. To get a true sense of the history of Berlin, it is important to visit the Jewish Museum and Holocaust Memorial Europe.If you think you need a break in the occupied city, be sure of stop the Tiergarten. This beautiful central park is full of beautiful gardens, including coffee and beer garden. For a little change, you can tour the city in a boat excursion that will take you on a large number of lakes and canals of the city.After the end of the Cold War, Berlin has seen a boom in construction hotels. Today, there are a large number of tourist accommodation at prices relatively cheap. The hotels are scattered throughout the city, but are concentrated in the western part of the city. Youth hostels are available for regular members and hostels which are similar to youth hostels, but for everyone remained mostly backpackers. Bed and breakfasts are often denied and they are a good option for visitors. Another option is the pension which are similar to small hotels.
