Axarquia - The Mudejar Route

On the easternmost part of the Costa del Sol, near Malaga, protected from cold northerly winds by the mountain ranges of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara and open to the entire African continent from the Mediterranean, we find an area known as the Axarquia. Mountains and the coast, hot and fertile, rural and cosmopolitan, white and blue are all terms used to describe the region. The Axarquia is a land of history and legend, the mark of its past is still present in the many towers sentry along its coastline. Its privileged location and climate have attracted many cultures that have chosen to settle here Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and especially Moslems. The Axarquia offers some splendid circuits to discover the many secrets of the region. One of the most interesting is the Muedejar Route itineries. The road crosses the vast legacy of the last inhabitants of the region. This is reflected in the beautiful buildings in cities dating back to the 16th century. The same people also left an interesting agricultural activity that continues to this day, such as wine Moscatel, famous and appreciated, which is produced from the region by using grapes traditional methods. The Mudejar Route covers five cities the central part of the Axarquia, which it retains the most remarkable examples of Mudejar architecture in the region. Arenas, located in a small depression surrounded by hills, as Cathedral and the Castle Bentomiz, including Arabs built on an ancient Iberian. Near there is a minaret, Alminar of Daimalos, in the city of the same name.Archez, a village of only some 400 inhabitants, retains the enchantment of its "Morisco 'roots, because we can admire the architectural treasures Muslims left Before being deported, as the Minaret Tour of the Church of the 14th century, and now topped by a Christian belfry. In Salares we will find another fine example of Mudéjar art in the Minaret Round (14th century) of the parish church of Santa Ana, which belfry was also added. In this city, we have a chance to try a wine that is unlike any other because it is produced from one type of grape, which is unique and unparalleled: Rome grape.Passing through Sedella, whitewashed a beautiful city with many jurisdictions, we come to Canillas de Aceituno, at the foot of the Sierra de Tejada mountain range. There is an impressive view of the Rubite Velez and river valleys, where interesting journey comes to an end.
