When people go on vacation, they tend to believe they are getting their best deal, when they have shopped different hotels and different venues and found the best advertised price. If you think this way, let me tell you now - in no uncertain terms - you are spending more money than you should have to spend.

Three Questions Designed To Save You Money

1. What is the best price you can give me on this room, or whatever?

2. Is that the best you can do?

3. If the answer is No, repeat questions one and two.

Hotels Need To Fill Rooms

More so in a time of recession, like we are in right now, hotels are desperate to fill rooms. If you are at a hotel with a nearly-packed parking lot, the chances of getting a reduced rate on your hotel room is low. However, if the parking lot at the hotel is less than half full, hotel proprietors are more inclined to jump through hoops to get your business.

Be prepared for the hotel proprietor who is willing to call your bluff. If you tell the person behind the desk that you "will go elsewhere" if they do not cut the price, be prepared to walk out the door if the answer is "No." More often than not, if your request is met with a "No" at a hotel with few cars in the parking lot, and you start moving towards the door to leave, the hotel proprietor will call you back to the desk, before you reach the front door.

If the parking lot is full, chances are good that the hotel proprietor will not give you a better deal, even if you ask and threaten to leave.

The truth is that you don't even need to threaten to leave, in order to secure a better deal. All you need to do is to simply ask. What is the best price you can give me on that room? And, is that the best you can do?

Is that the best you can do, is a very important question. This is the question that determines what the lowest price really is. The worst that can happen is that you don't get a discount price... That is why you should never threaten to leave, unless you have every intention of carrying out that threat.

Better Deals Do Not Always Mean Lower Prices

Suppose your hotel proprietor is willing to give you a free breakfast, if you pay the full price on the room. Breakfast for five at McDonald's generally costs me $15-$20. So a free breakfast meal for staying at one particular hotel still adds up to money saved, so sometimes, full price for a hotel room will save me money.

One of the best lines in my book of tricks is to wait until the transaction is done, then ask for my "breakfast ticket". Almost universally, the hotel clerk will ask me "what breakfast ticket?" When I respond, I tell the clerk that I always get tickets for a free breakfast when I stay at other hotels. Nine times out of ten, the desk clerk will say "Oh, okay," and pull a breakfast ticket from under their desk. Free breakfast is good enough for me.

If you are on vacation, as opposed to a business trip, your hotel may have discount coupons available for local attractions. If you are looking to visit a specific attraction, don't be afraid to ask if your hotel has discount tickets available for that attraction. You might be surprised what you hotel might be able to offer to you.

God Gave You The Ability To Speak And Ask Questions - Don't Be Afraid To Ask

On March 4, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States was inaugurated into office. He entered the presidency during the midst of a banking panic. In his inaugural speech, he spoke the words he is most famous for today, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

FDR's words of wisdom are as relevant today, as they were when they were spoken in 1933. The only thing you have to fear from asking questions of hotel proprietors or other attraction venue operators is fear itself. So long as you don't make the mistake of trying to strengthen your question with a threat, you have nothing to fear and money to gain, simply by asking three really easy and simple questions.

I cannot reiterate this point enough... Don't be afraid to ask for a better price or a better deal. As Ben Franklin was so fond of saying, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

Inishmor is the largest and most accessible of the Aran Islands. Return to Kilronan for a fine evening meal in the Aran Islands Hotel Restaurant recommended for it?s excellent seafood, unwind later with a few Irish coffees and some marvellous live Irish traditional music.

The next day hire a bicycle or better still a horse and tramp around the island, popping in to visit the Old Light House, Man of Aran Cottage and The Worm hole. When you get back to Kilronan make sure to take in the Aran Heritage Centre. Whittle away your evening on a wee pub crawl having a jar or two in Tigh Fitz, Joe Watty?s, Ti Joe Mac?s and the famous American bar.

Neckties are your most delicate pieces of clothes. They are usually made from finest silk, and cannot be ironed and should never be dry-cleaned. This means that preventing any wrinkles in first place is a must. To do this, fold your ties in half and store them between some soft clothes. Keep any sharp edges away from your ties as this can damage the fabric and can cause wrinkles. Rolling up your ties is another option. Start by rolling up the tie at the skinny end. Once rolled up, store the tie in one of your dress shoes.

4. Unpacking

Keep the time your clothes are in your suitcase to the minimum. No matter how tired you are from your travel, unpack your suit, dress shirts and ties as soon as you arrive. Hypnosis for Seasickness -- a Psychotherapist Explains

For many people, the nausea of seasickness can be a really unpleasant and often debilitating experience

In certain cases - SCUBA diving, for example, it can even put the individual in real danger. Throwing up into an air-providing mouthpiece, for example, can not only be scary, it can be life-threatening.

But what do we really know about seasickness - and is there a real cure for seasickness?

Well, we know that it is most often caused by the confusion of visual cues coming from the eye that tell the brain things are stable, and internal cues - particularly those coming from the centre of balance, in the inner ear - that tell the brain that things are in fact moving.

On a boat or a ship, for example, when we look at the cabin, visually it appears to be fixed and unmoving, yet our internal centre of balance tells us otherwise and this produces feelings of confusion and nausea.

Also, the rising and falling of the ship or boat, the roll, pitch and heave, can produce uncomfortable feelings in the bowels as they press against the diaphragm, and this can further aggravate the situation.

As a consequence, stress hormones are produced which, combined with the natural defensive contraction and tightening of the stomach muscles causes the symptoms that those suffering from seasickness know only too well: shivering and shaking, cold sweats and dizziness, the feeling of blood being drained from the face and head and the intense nausea that so often leads to vomiting.

In short, we experience seasickness.

A useful technique when feelings of seasickness appear is to focus on the horizon, if it is visible. Failing this, it can be helpful to simply lie down on your back, near the centre of the boat or ship, with eyes closed and breathing deeply. Instead of staying below deck, it's better to be out in the open, with the wind blowing in your face.

There are, of course, a number of commercial anti-seasickness preparations available, such as Dramamine or Scopolamine, and many find that ginger capsules, ginger tea, or sucking on a piece of crystallized ginger is of help.

Yet these remedies are far from successful for everyone.

It is here that advanced hypnotherapy can be so effective; helping the brain to process, re-interpret and harmonize input in a balanced manner.

When Kevin Costner was filming his movie 'Waterworld' in Hawaii, for example, he found that no matter what he swallowed or did seasickness took over, causing major problems. His seasickness was causing highly expensive delays in filming. Laughlin, Nevada is Known as the Unvegas

The one-time owners of a tiny eight-room motel on the banks of the Colorado River must be feeling a little like the Native Americans who sold Manhattan Island for, let's say, less than today's market value.

Not that these motel owners were short-changed by visionary Don Laughlin - it's just that now, four decades later, Laughlin has parlayed that $235,000 investment into a big-time resort empire that so far has drawn eight other casino/hotels to his little stretch of the Colorado. In the meantime, Laughlin has pumped millions in casino profits back into such community projects as a bridge to Arizona and an airport capable of landing 737's.

Who could blame folks if they named the town after him, too?

Laughlin had made a few bucks selling a gambling club in Las Vegas and, while flying over what is now Laughlin, Nevada, the soon-to-be resort magnate looked down and saw a stretch of the river nestled between two sets of craggy mountains. The river also is the dividing line between Nevada and Arizona, and California's just a few miles up the road.

"If we build it, they will come." Not Don Laughlin's words, but no doubt his sentiments as he looked into his unusually reliable crystal ball and foresaw the development of another Las Vegas just about an hour's drive south of the real one. In 1966 he opened the Riverside Casino with 12 slot machines and two playing tables. There were only four rooms to be used as accommodations becuase the Laughlin family lived in the other four rooms.

Fast-forward to a Riverside Casino that, over the years, has grown to more than 1,400 rooms including two towers, various casinos and plenty of extras to make the property a favorite for visitors to Laughlin. Lots of other familiar names have now staked out claims along the Colorado, including the Flamingo, Golden Nugget and Harrahs. There are now 10,000 rooms and 60 restaurants serving the more than 5 million visitors who come to Laughlin each year.

Why people come to Laughlin is best explained when you look at the city's visitor demographics. To start with, they're a bit older - about two-thirds of them are 50 or older, and about a third are 65 or older. They spend an average of $33 a night to stay in Laughlin, but they'll budget more than $400 to gamble while they're in town for their two or three day stay.

In short, the people who come to Laughlin would rather spend money on gambling than on fancy hotel rooms, and chances are they're also more than a little phobic about the traffic and parking problems they think they might encounter in Las Vegas. As one hotel marketing person told us, Laughlin really is thought of by many visitors as the Old Las Vegas - the one that was more focused on providing cheap beds and cheap eats, but plenty of opportunities to gamble. Another phrase we heard was the "un-Vegas" that takes visitors back to a simpler time and place that is easier on the pocketbook.

Judging from our recent visit to Laughlin, the niche still seems to be working, despite more competition nowadays from Indian casinos that have siphoned off some of the California visitors who now may be content to stay and gamble at a casino closer to home. But Laughlin still pulls them in very well from several parts of California, and from many other places across the country including destinations in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Three different airlines now are providing charter service into Laughlin from dozens of destinations.

The weather was great during our November visit -- mid 70's, sunny, cloudless skies. In fact, winter is the best time to visit Laughlin because the locals will tell you that summer can be 10 degrees hotter than the already toasty LasVegas.

With consistently warm weather, another factor comes into play in Laughlin: The River. We read someplace that this is the only part of Nevada that really has this much water to play around in and, judging from the many ski-doos and speed boats on the Colorado, we would not be surprised. The hotels showcase the river as much as they would some big-name entertainer - they almost all have boat docks and shuttle boats for guests to cross the river, and there are also cruises on sternwheeler replicas and even high-speed river boats.

In fact, the river walk in Laughlin is not unlike the river walk in New Orleans - the Colorado at this juncture is quite a bit narrower than the Mississippi, but the festive walkway with restaurants and shops all along the way can be just as entertaining. And, of course, Laughlin has a series of casinos whereas New Orleans just has one in the riverfront area.

Laughlin really doesn't have Las Vegas-quality entertainment. The city does get high-quality and current acts, including many of the top country music entertainers on the charts today. But you also may be likely to see someone who has already peaked, possibly quite a few years ago. While we were there, the current and coming attractions included names like Vicki Lawrence, Charo, Mel Tillis, Roy Clark and a special "Where are they now" show at the Edgewater featuring several former child stars like Paul Peterson (the Donna Reed Show) and Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver).

One big plus is that the entertainment in Laughlin is pretty cheap. If you've gone to Las Vegas and passed on the entertainment just because it was too expensive, you'll be pleasantly surprised in Laughlin. Instead of $100 or $150 a ticket, name acts can be as little as $25 a seat.

Most of the big-name entertainment comes to the Riverside, which was our base of operations while in Laughlin. With little plastic signs in our guestroom saying "The customer is always King," we could not help but get a sense that Don Laughlin has trained his staff to focus on customer service. Throughout the Riverside complex there are special indications that the Riverside has been a work in progress. There's a 34-lane bowling alley and adjacent Kids Castle that allows you to drop your kids off for $6.50 an hour. A "Loser's Lounge" has pictures of famous losers on the walls. There's a terrific antique car museum. Oh, and of course don't miss the Watch Man, a place where you'll find thousands of watches with thousands of designs including several with Jesus Christ on the dial. There's something for everyone at the Riverside.

There also doesn't seem to be much sin to this version of Sin City - no one handing out pamphlets advertising escorts, no over-the-top billboards or signs, no real attention to girlie shows with the exception of one "Showgirls" revue at one of the hotels. You get the feeling that many of the visitors here might be some of those voters concerned about moral values, and one guesses that whatever happens in Laughlin most certainly will not stay in Laughlin.

Reinforcing this was our chance encounter with some favorite relatives from Hemet, California, who were visiting Laughlin the same time as we were, and also staying at the Riverside. We know them as church-going, God-fearing people and they were in town for four days of what they consider to be good, clean fun.

Somehow, we think that's exactly what Don Laughlin had in mind when he first laid eyes on that little eight-room motel on the banks of the Colorado River.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Laughlin is at the southern tip of Nevada and about a five- or six-hour drive from many points in Southern California.

WHAT: Laughlin is a trip back in time to the Las Vegas of 40 years ago. The strip of nine casinos can be walked, for the most part, using a walkway along the Colorado River.

WHEN: Any time of year, although summers can be very hot. The best option is to visit in winter when temperatures are in the 70s and the sun shines often.

Pula, a unique experience in the South Coast Pula is a populous town in southern west of Sardinia. It is located in an ideal location along the southwestern coast of the Golfo degli Angeli, in the area of Sulcis-Iglesiente, in the province of Cagliari.

It is an important agricultural center of sardinia and during the summer it doubles the number of its inhabitants thanks to the seaside tourism. It is at only 40 km from Cagliari-Elmas and 30 km from the port of the Sardinian capital.

Agricultural production of excellence such as tomatoes and figs share the area with the main economic activity, tourism.

The tourists season start from the month of April until late October, reaching peaks in late July and throughout the whole month of August. The south west coastal area is fabulous. There are kilometres of beautiful beaches with golden sand. From Pula to Teulada the coast is varied. There is almost a continous line of beaches from Pula to Chia.

Once the coast is broken by rocks (as Capo Spartivento and Capo Malfatano), it becomes more rocky and less populated. it is possible to see several small islands in front of the coast.

There are also numerous Saracen towers located in the most strategic points. The beaches in the area of Chia, famous for its sand dunes and the lagoon, are also ideal for practicing sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. The frame of these beaches is a wild nature made up of mountains full of Mediterranean scrub and woodland.

"Pula dimensione estate" is the name that has been given for years to the calendar of events that give live to the summer nights from June to September. Services to citizens and tourists improve year after year, many accommodations, restaurants, attractions. Pula is really a dimension of summer, or better a dimension of vacation. An ideal place for a holiday in Sardinia.

Pula is also well known because its territory holds the ruins of the ancient city of Nora of Phoenician origin. Today there are still significant traces left by Phoenicians, Punic and Romans. Among the discoverings left we can mention the temple of Tanit from the Phoenician-Punic period and the Roman theater, the only known example in Sardinia, where it takes place every summer the event called "Night of the poets".

In the centre of the town the archaeological museum Giovanni Patroni that preserves recovered findings from the archaeological area of Nora. Of great interest it is also the Romanesque church of Sant'Efisio of end of the XI century. It is located on the beach of Nora, the closest beach to the town.

According to tradition in this place was martyred Sant'Efisio, Roman warrior who became christian. Not to be missed the event of the 1st of May the religious procession in honor of the saint who arrives here. The statue of Sant'efisio, coming from a church located at the center of Cagliari (Chiesetta di Stampace), stops in this church for a short period.

The trouble is that with so many campsites available, it's hard to know which one to choose. I intend to make it a little bit clearer by giving my top five family-friendly campsites in The Vendee.

Camping le Clarys Plage

If your family's idea of a great holiday is to enjoy the beach, and to spend time swimming in a fun and feature packed pool complex, then Camping le Clarys Plage may be just the campsite for you. The golden sands of the local beach are just 5 minutes walk away, while the pool provides excellent facilities for children and parents alike. There are plenty of slides, a jacuzzi, fountains and a separate covered pool and paddling pool for the children and toddlers. There is also evening entertainment throughout the season, and while there's no restaurant or shop on site, a fine selection of bars and eateries are just a short walk away.

Camping les Biches

This is one of my favourite campsites in the Vendee, and is ideal for active families. As well as being close to the golden sands of the coast, Camping les Biches has a varied range of sporting activities and play areas for children of all ages. There's a fantastic indoor and outdoor pool complex, a playground ideal for toddlers and a family friendly mini-golf course. On top of this, there are many other sports facilities including tennis, table tennis and volleyball. Finally, the site entertainment varies from live bands, to discos and karaoke. All of which will ensure your family have a fantastic holiday whilst enjoying the comfort and luxuries of a mobile home in the Vendee.

Camping La Garangeoire

You may think that travelling to a campsite based in the countryside will limit the family friendly fun you can have whilst camping in the Vendee, but Camping La Garangeoire looks to dispel this myth. It's been awarded 'three Red Tents' by Michelin and it boasts some of the best activities onsite for children including a playroom, mini golf, pony rides, archery and pedaloes. On top of this, there's also the excellent swimming pool which has plenty of water slides. Adults can relax at the peaceful lake onsite whilst enjoying a spot of fishing.

Camping Les Ecureuils

Nestled in the heart of the forests of the Vendee, Camping les Ecureuils boasts not only a Michelin three red tent rating but also a safe haven for families with small children. The campsite has a safe and friendly environment with plenty of space for energetic children to play. Families can enjoy the L-shaped pool (with separate children's pool), as well as the lively entertainment program which includes magic shows and live music.

Camping La Yole

If you want to combine the golden sands of the coast as well as the forests of other campsites in the Vendee, then Camping la Yole is for you. Set in the heart of nature, this is a perfect location for those who want to relax whilst the children are off enjoying the pool complex which includes a large outdoor pool, children's pool, heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi and waterslides. But Venice has a big problem. The city is slowly sinking into the sea that surrounds it. And unless more is done to save it there won't be Venice left for future generations to visit. Venice is a city is built on 118 small islands that are linked by more than 400 bridges. Many of its historic buildings are mounted on ancient wooden piles, driven deep into the silty sea bed.

Bur passing boats churn up the mud and damage the wooden foundations, salt water seeps into the ancient brick work, air pollution from mainland factories damage older buildings, and even pigeons are a major nuisance as thousands of birds leave tons of acidic droppings to eat away at the ancient stonework.

But the greatest threat to Venice is flooding. Not only is the city slowly sinking into the mud, the sea levels are also rising, thanks to global warming. Since the 1930s city authorities have pumped out water from the lagoon to supply factories, causing the city to sink about one-fifth an inch each year.

St. Mark's Square is the city's lowest point and today high tides flood it about 90 times a year. Temporary walkways are slung over the paving slabs and cafe owners must move their tables to higher floors.

In 1966 a freak high tide sent water levels six feet above normal, flooding much of Venice. Power blackouts followed and thousands of drowned rats were seen floating in the canals. The flood caused major damage to the city's valuable paintings, statues and other treasures.

Now the Italian government and the European parliament has taken on the battle to save Venice. They are funding a multi billion euro plan to save the city. It is dubbed MOSE, after Moses, the biblical figure that parted the Red Sea.

The MOSE scheme has 79 giant hollow steel panels, each weighing 300 tons, strung across the lagoon. They will swing up on giant hinges to form a protective barrier during high tides. Engineers say entire city can be protected in just 30 minutes. The massive construction project, due to be completed in 2012, is expected to cost 7 billion euros.

Critics claim the rise of sea levels from global warming could make MOSE obsolete in less than 50 years. Other warn of an environmental catastrophe. Venetians flush human and animal waste into the canals and let the high tides flush the filthy water out to sea. MOSE could turn Venice into a giant septic tank.

There is only one thing they can all agree on. If something isn't done, and soon, Venice's days are numbered. Everyone is certain that the city must be saved, not just for Venice and not just for Italy, but for the world. After all, Venice is a world treasure.

Days 6 and 7 - Little Shompole, Masai Mara, Kenya

After your morning activity you will be transferred by private charter flight to Little Shompole where you stay for two nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

The Shompole area has an amazing variety of typically African scenery with acacia woodland and open grassy plains irrigated by rivers. There is also a small area of rainforest and swamp while at the foot of the Nguruman escarpment is the vast watery expanse of Lake Natron, one of the best breeding grounds for flamingos. This considerably varied landscape supports large numbers of animals including elephant, hyena, antelope and a wide range of plains game including zebra and giraffe. Shompole is also a good place for seeing predators, both the more spectacular ones such as lion and cheetah, as well as smaller cats such as serval.

London has a rich history that covers more than 2000 years, so it would be impossible to talk about it all. However, the city was particularly badly affected amid world war 2.

During world war two, London was bombed heavily. kids were evacuated to the countryside to escape the bombing. the people who remained hid from from bombs in the london underground. However, almost 35 000 the people of london were killed, & approximately 50,000 were seriously injured.

One of the most popular places to visit in London is Buckingham Palace, which has been the official london residence of the british monarchy since 1837. The palace was initially opened to the public in 1993 & the changing of the guard has proved especially popular with them. This ceremony takes place in front of the palace at 11.30 every day in summer & every other day during the winter.

Buckingham Palace is located in Westminster & its accessible by tube & bus.

London boasts some of the finest shops in the world. Whether you are are you looking for designer fashion, souvenirs or tasty food, you are sure to find the things you want here.

One of the city's most renowned outlets is harrods in knightsbridge. This department store is one of the world's most famous and was formed in 1834. now run by Mohamed Al Fayed, it employs over five thousand people and boasts countless designer concessions.

London boasts fabulous history, which we are sure that all of us will find exhilarating. From fabulous eateries, to elite night clubs & wine bars, there is things for everyone to enjoy in London.

One of the most renowned night clubs is the Embassy, which is a members club on Old Burlington street. The nightclub is relatively pricey, but it is full of celebrities & fabulous for star spotting. in addition to this, it serves fabulous food by michelin starred Garry Hollihead.

Because its such a enormous location, London is extremely simple to get to. in fact, its well-connected by rail & has some large train stations, containing London Bridge, London Victoria, London Euston & Liverpool st. in addition to this, the city also has 3 major airports, Heathrow; Stanstead & Luton.

Driving in London can be tricky due to the congestion charge, but the city has a wonderful underground & bus network to help people get about.

London Travel - Free Things To Do In London

London is my favorite city on this planet. I first went there after graduating high school and for the past 20 years I try and visit at least every couple of years. Unfortunately, the exchange rate between the US dollar and the British pound has made visiting nowadays quite a bit more expensive than it used to be, but there are still plenty of free things to do in London. Here's a list of some of my favorites.

London Museum Hopping

Most of the big museums in London are free to visit. So on each of my trips to London, I usually visit a couple and spend a few hours wandering the galleries and exhibits. Some of my favorites are the National Portrait Gallery just on the edge of Trafalgar Square; the Victoria & Albert (V&A) in South Kensington; and the Tate Modern on Bankside near the London Bridge.

Window Shopping and the Street Markets

There are so many cool shops in London, that I like to stay away from the chain stores. It's more fun to putter around shops that aren't just like the ones back home. My favorite location for window shopping is Covent Garden and the streets that run off of it. I usually duck into Neal's Yard on Neal St, just a few blocks from Covent Garden, to treat myslf to some nice cheese at the Neals Yard Dairy. Sorry, the cheese isn't free!

Other favorite puttering spots are Kings Road (starting near Sloane Square), and Carnaby Street. Some of the side streets in Soho also have some interesting shops and if you like books, Charing Cross Road and the streets that run off of it are fun to wander around.

Also, be sure to check out some of London's most popular street markets. My favorite is the one at Portobello Road in Notting Hill for lots of cool second hand goods and flea market finds. There's a market here six days a week! Sunday is the only day there is no market.

If it's Sunday though, you can always head over to Camden Market. That's the best day to go there anyway. As you exit Camden Tube station, just head north, but you won't have any problem with getting lost because the place will be mobbed with people.

People Watching

No matter what time of year you visit, London is always bustling with people. There are some great locations in the city to just spend a couple of hours soaking in the flavor of the place. Piccadilly Square and Trafalgar Square are the more obvious spots, but I also like Covent Garden because it tends to be a bit quieter and they usually have street performers too.

If you find yourself wandering around on a Sunday and you aren't in the mood for Camden Market, why not head over to Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park and see who's decided to give a speech. Watching the audience that gathers is as fun as watching some of the more entertaining speakers.

Hopefully, I've helped you out with a few ideas of some of the different free things you can do in London. The city is such a vibrant and ever-changing place to be that I find just wandering in whichever direction I feel like turning leads to some exciting new place to be discovered. All you really need is a comfortable pair of shoes and maybe a pass for the Underground.

La Quinta is Luxury Oasis in California Desert

The chicken-and-egg question guests often ask at La Quinta Resort & Club is which came first: the city of La Quinta or the resort? The answer is neither. The Spaniards came first when they created a base in La Quinta along their route to the San Gabriel Mission.

Several centuries later, along came big shot Bay-area businessman Walter Morgan, who chose to build La Quinta resort pretty much where the Spaniards had their base. It was much later that the city of La Quinta was named for the resort — one of only two cities in the country to be named this way. The other is Beverly Hills, named after the famous Beverly Hills Resort.

The area Morgan chose for his resort is in the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains near Palm Springs and, today, La Quinta Resort & Club has become a massive 42-acre collection of casitas, golf courses, swimming pools and tennis courts that, for the first-timer, requires a roadmap to navigate. Charming Spanish architecture and abundant vegetation weave a colorful tapestry against the mountain backdrop, making La Quinta Resort & Club one of the prettiest spa resorts you'll ever see. It's the perfect choice for a California vacation of any length.

Our trip from San Diego to La Quinta was quick and easy using the back route through the parched landscape near Anza, culminating in a 10-mile winding, downgrade taking vehicles about 5,000 feet down to the desert floor where temperatures were nearly 20 degrees hotter than on top of the grade. Any trip to Palm Springs during the spring and summer requires a little pre-planning to manage the heat. You don't just show up and stay on the golf course all day in triple-digit temperatures.

The locals in the Palm Springs area have learned to time outdoor activities so that they're accomplished in the relatively cool mornings. In some cases, afternoon activities will work if you know, for example, your golf course will have shade. One of the La Quinta courses always gets covered in shade from the Santa Rosa Mountains at 3 p.m. each day.

"Managing the weather here is just a matter of keeping hydrated and wearing sunscreen," explained Sara Harper, La Quinta's Director of Marketing Communications. "And the nights here are so unbelievably pleasant."

We hit an unusually hot weekend for spring — it got as high as 108 degrees — but we noticed that the heat really didn't get uncomfortable until early to mid-afternoon. As they say, it's a dry heat in the Palm Springs area, and the 90-degree temps in the morning hours felt downright refreshing.

But there is no question that your time at La Quinta Resort & Club — whatever the time of the year — is bound to involve some serious submerging in one of the resort's 42 swimming pools. No, that's not a typo — La Quinta not only has 42 pools, but 53 hot tub spas. Many of the resort's casitas have their own swimming pools, but other casitas are grouped around one or more mid-size pools where there seemed to be plenty of room to swim and ample deck chairs to accommodate anyone who wanted to lay out in the desert sun.

Our "starlight" casita was a spacious upstairs unit in a two-story building overlooking one of the swimming pools. Floor plans at La Quinta offer more than the usual amount of space — 450 square feet or more — and that, along with the high ceilings, gives a feeling of openness. An incredibly comfortable king bed, hide-a-bed, desk and audio/video entertainment area were in the main room; the bath area was equally comfortable with an over-sized bathtub, walk-in shower stall, double vanities and a separate room for the commode.

Casitas each are decorated with a Southwestern flair. Mexican influenced pottery designs, wrought iron mirror frames and bed treatments with browns, reds and yellows created a fiesta of color in our casita's main room. Outside on the deck were lounge chairs, a table and umbrella to enjoy the outdoors in total privacy.

The casita buildings are connected by a maze of walkways that will keep you reaching for your hotel map. These sidewalks also are a primary thoroughfare for the golf carts and bicycles driven and ridden by resort employees as they spread out all over the vast complex that totals 800 casitas altogether.

Back when Walter Morgan first built the resort in 1926, the resort plan was a bit more modest — only 20 casitas, although he did build the valley's first golf course. La Quinta Resort was created to lure Hollywood stars to the Coachella Valley where they could get away from the studio and relax in privacy — which of course had something to do with why the Palm Springs area became popular with Hollywood movie stars.

At La Quinta, the list of Hollywood stars was impressive — such lminaries as Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Katherine Hepburn, Eddie Cantor and Shirley Temple were regulars. Greta Garbo had a house on the property, and Frank Capra wrote many of his movie scripts in the same La Quinta casita that today has his typewriter and one of his scripts awaiting the lucky guest renting that particular casita.

Hollywood stars still come to La Quinta today because, like many KSL Resorts properties, this resort is laid out in a campus style that allows a celebrity to avoid entering through a main entrance or elevator — the stars just drive right to their casitas, parking a few steps away and then get lost in the resort during their entire stay. This layout also is beneficial for everyday vacationers who don't want to be bothered by convention and other group activities; when conventions are held at La Quinta they are held in areas where regular guests aren't likely to even know they are there.

Sports celebrities, too, are in abundance — especially tennis players. La Quinta tennis pro Mike Casey has relationships with many world-class players who periodically will train at La Quinta. With 23 courts — clay, grass and hard surface — the resort has become popular also for ordinary people who just want to improve their tennis game. Many of the courts are lighted, which means the players can manage the Palm Springs heat by playing at night.

For golfers, La Quinta offers five courses, including three designated as PGA West.

For those of us who just want to relax and enjoy great food, La Quinta — as near as we could tell — fills the bill there, too. We only had time to sample the Adobe Grill — which served scrumptious and authentic Mexican cuisine — but the resort also boasts Morgan's, a premium steakhouse, Azur by Le Bernadin seafood restaurant and the Spa Bistro, offering spa cuisine to make your stay as healthy as it was fun. Actually, including the golf courses, there are seven restaurants at La Quinta.

Fascinating Kent in England

Kent has the most attractions out of all the counties in Britain in any season or for anybody.

Kent has enchanting gardens, mysterious castles, fascinating museums, animal parks, steam trains, outdoor activities, historic houses and great maritime heritage.

If you want adventure, grab a lantern and get ready, as there are miles of mystery and history here beneath your feet.

Explore the passage ways of Chislehurst. These caves were made for the people's protection during World War II. The Caves Church, Druid Altar, Haunted Pool and more for the guided tour that takes 45min approx.

Danson house is a building that was constructed for the Mayor of London, now it has been restored for the nation, and is open to the public for the first time in over 30 years. It is one of Robert Taylor's finest villas and was built in 1760 - advance booking is recommended here.

The Guildhall Museum is a treasure trove of Britain's Medway colourful history. It is Kent's most visited museum with the ornate 17th century Guildhall Chamber, the Hulks Experience and Dickens's Discovery Room. Many authentic objects and also use of modern technology enliven one's visit.

In nearby Chatham the Brooks Pumping Station provides an interesting insight into 20th century technology.

Rochester Castle is another well preserved and elegant example of Norman architecture in England. Restoration House and Garden is an ancient city mansion, though privately owned, it has some beautiful interiors. You also have a Road to Trafalgar Exhibition and the Museum of the Royal Dockyard.

Another unique part of Britain's maritime heritage is Paddle Steamer 'Kingswear Castle' which offers morning, afternoon, evening and full day cruises from Chatham & Rochester. You can watch the paddle in the water or relax and enjoy a drink and let the beautiful scenery pass by.

In the picturesque valley of the River Medway there is the attractive turreted Upnor Castle built in 1559 on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I to defend her country from invaders. The story of the Dutch raid is told by audio visual method in graphic detail. It is open daily from April to October.

The prize winning Royal Engineers Museum covers the work of Britain's engineers in both War & Peace, from 1066 to the present time. Here you can see photographs of the military divers, engineering tanks and vehicles, 26 Victorian Crosses, gallantry awards of the Falkland war, regalia of 4 Field Marshals, relics of Gordon and Kitchener, a Harrier jump jet, early torpedo and Wellington's map of the battle of Waterloo.

Belmont is an 18th century house which is set in exclusive views of the rolling Kent Countryside. It contains fine paintings, furniture and Indian Silverware and one of the most extensive collections of clocks and watches in the country.

Take a guided tour of Shepherd Neame Brewery in Kent. It was the first brewery in Britain. It has a newly refurbished Visitor Centre and have a look at the old mash tuns, taste the natural mineral water from its well, try the malted barley and you'll certainly smell the locally grown Kentish hops. Here you can also see the old and bygone era's delivery vehicles and step into the cooper's workshop. There are also the great & tasty Kentish ales and special lagers and this shop.

Enchanting Mount Ephraim Gardens has terraces of beautiful smelling roses leading straight to a small lake in the woodlands. These are home to lots of varieties of vegetation like spring bulbs, trees and shrubs including rhododendrons, topiary and also a Japanese rock garden, new exciting grass maze, gardens and a tea room. Better check its opening and closing time before visiting here.

Kent's Wild Woodland Discovery Park helps you come very close to nature. It reveals the wildlife of many British animals like badgers, otters, beavers, wolves and 50 other species in their natural environments. Have fun in the woods and let your kids play free in the Treetops adventure playland. It is open all year round from 10am.

In Quex Museum, House and Gardens you will find the finest Regency-period world class collections of the Powell-Cotton family. Great dioramas of African wildlife, displays of weaponry, costumes, archeology and Far Eastern artefacts. Beautiful gardens with a plant stall, restaurant and gift shop. It is open from mid March to 31st October.

Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are sort of jungles of Britain. In Howletts which is situated in 90 acres and is the largest collection of western lowland Gorillas in captivity in the world and it houses the largest herd of African Elephants in Britain. Go through this jungle in the lion-tailed macaque enclosure. Port Lympne is set in 600 acres of which has the largest herd of black rhinos outside Africa plus Indian elephants, Siberian and Indian tigers, barbary lions and the world's largest gorillarium 'The Palace Of The Apes'. It's open every day except Christmas from 10am to 6pm.

A Luxury Family Vacation in Mauritius

A Luxury Family Vacation to Mauritius is a dream for many people, and if you choose Le Prince Maurice then you won't be disappointed. As a family our family vacation idea was in fact La Belle Mare Plage in August 2008. We chose it because they offered us a fantastic deal, but when we arrived at the airport no awaiting vehicle, and although the hotel were expecting us, we hung around for an hour before the Manager came up and apologised, saying our suites had been damaged, and would we mind if they upgraded us to Le Prince Maurice their sister hotel, where we would have two suites and not a suite and an adjoining room.

Having little choice we accepted, and what a joy Le Prince Maurice turned out to be. We had two suites in the garden a short walk to a lovely white sand beach, and whilst the suites were really just very large rooms, and a huge bed, the bathrooms were a room in themselves so we were very comfortable indeed.

Le Prince Maurice has what you need for a luxury family vacation, and indeed we would have chosen it anyway had we been able to afford it. With sporty children aged 10 and 13 the fact that there was free water skiing was a huge bonus. Our son learned almost from scratch, until he was able to go right round the bay, and our daughter just wouln't stay away from the jetty. Dad could sail a Hoby Cat to his heart's content, and mother could sit and watch. The spa with sauna, steam room was much used as was the hot pool, after playing squash or tennis in the evening, all absolutely the ideal way to spend a luxury family vacation.

There was a shuttle bus to the two golf courses at La Belle mare Plage, and we played golf on 10 of the fourteen days we were there. You need to understand the golf is free, caddies are not, and if you play the Links course, then a buggy hire is compulsory, and at 100 Euros per round for the four of us, that was somewhat steep. We took pencil bags with only seven clubs so were easily able to walk the Legends which has water on every hole!! This meant that for most of the time our golf was free, and lovely courses they are too. You will need a lot of balls which you can buy on the quiet at very cheap prices in the bushes on the courses, so you will need to carry cash!!

Money is possibly the biggest drawback on our Mauritius Luxury Holiday, or in any Mauritius Hotel, because their currency is Euros, and you will pay through the nose. Lunch for four consisting of a green salad, two pizzas, and a toasted sandwich with soft drinks and a beer would not be less than £60. Drinks are expensive, including bottled water, but to be fair water was brought around the pool at no charge. My advice would be to empty your room fridge immediately, get the room boy to take it away, and then take a taxi to the village and stock up on soft drinks and beers, with your duty free to consume.

The food in the three restaurants was absolutely top class, with an a la carte menu every night, and two items excluded from half board, and that was lobster and Japanese Steak. We ate very well indeed, and you can get a very reasonable wine for around 23 Euros. We were asked to a BBQ at La Belle Mare Plage as guests, and discovered their Half Board people had to pay an additional 48 Euro's to partake. By comparison Le Prince Maurice had a BBQ which was better and included.

Extras were more expensive at Le Prince Maurice compared to La Belle Mare Plage, which by the way is a sister hotel, but we received a generous 15% discount .

All in all Le Prince Maurice will provide you with a great Luxury Family Vacation, and although it is expensive, the free sports facilities more than make up for it.

Each tour, following an expert guide, takes ninety minutes and begins in the MCC Museum. You then process through the famous Pavilion to the well-known Long Room, which boasts panoramic views of the famous pitch and many portraits of the game's most-distinguished players. The Honours Boards in the dressing rooms reveals the most historic batting and bowling that has taken place here over the years.

The tour also covers the Tennis Court, the Cricket School and many of this famous ground's outstanding features: including the Grandstand, the new Mound Stand and the famous and controversial, yet futuristic, Media Centre (which is one of the "The Fifty Best Buildings in Britain"). You also have the chance to enjoy shopping for exclusive souvenirs at the shop, where the tour finishes.

You can book your visit on the day or well in advance, and specialist individual tours are also possible: for example, educational tours can always be tailored to meet the needs of school curricula, or architectural tours can be designed to concentrate on the buildings.

The MCC Museum, which is the starting point of the tour, is the world's oldest museum devoted to sport! Here you will find a marvellous range of exhibits, not least the world-famous Ashes urn. Arsenal FC was formed in 1886, and turned professional in 1891. After 93 years, Highbury has now been replaced by the new Emirates stadium.

You can visit this amazing venue and get a wonderful and informative view of the stadium that even the most ardent supporters rarely see.

A tour will let you visit the players' tunnel and the most amazing part of the club: the first team dressing room! The tour also takes in the plush Directors' Box, the site of many amusing incidents, the Press Conference Room, and the famous Arsenal Museum. If you want a small hotel, more of a romantic inn really, and it has to be on the BVI, then look no further than the Sandcastle Hotel which is beachfront on White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. To get here you obviously need to fly from your home, and then complete the journey by ferry from Tortola, which is a thirty minute journey. You won't need much in the way of luggage because the Sandcastle Hotel is very much a barefoot place to unwind, and forget the cares of the world.

You are right beside the sea that is a colour you can hardly begin to describe, and the beach as the name might suggest is soft white sand, but best of all you will be greeted with that happy degree of intimacy that people on the island have, so you will be welcomed like an old friend.

It is fair to say right away, that if you are looking for luxury, then the Sandcastle Hotel is probably not your ideal destination, but if it is a romantic getaway then this is certainly the kind of romantic inn that you will love.

As well as being small and intimate with only seven rooms the Sandcastle Hotel is famous for the Soggy Dollar Bar, which is the birthplace of the Original Painkiller a popular rum drink fed to guests. The bar takes its name from the fact that many guests swim ashore to drink there, thus the name Soggy Dollar from the state of their cash when they pay.

The accommodation splits between four cottages and two rooms, with two of the cottages beachfront, two garden, and the cottages have air conditioning, with none of them more than 70 feet from the shore. They are all comfortably furnished and the showers in the cottages are outside but enclosed and the water is heated by the sun, so hot in the evening but not so in the morning!! The beds are comfortable, and there is a plentiful supply of towels and beach towels.

There are no real planned and laid out activities at the Sandcastle Hotel, this is very much a lie around in a hammock, relax, read, lie in the sun, and enjoy watching the yachts come in. You do need to book in for meals, in the case of breakfast the night before in the kitchen where the bulletin board shows the daily menus. For dinner you need to sign up by mid afternoon, and you can expect very good food, which is good value for money, and although the choice may be a bit limited, you will be delighted at the quality.

The Sandcastle Hotel may be a small beachfront hotel, but the whole ambience from the white sand beach, the Soggy Dollar Bar, the beautiful turquoise blue water, makes it the almost perfect romantic getaway destination. All you need to do is relax in a place where there are no telephones, and no televisions, and no 21st Century hustle and bustle, just Jost Van Dyke BVI time, so lie back, close your eyes and forget about everything.

Travel just an hour north from San Francisco and it's like you've gone overseas ? there at the end of the picturesque, winding road through such quaint towns as San Anselmo, you come to a preserved part of the California coastline that looks like it came right out of a commercial for Irish Spring.

But this is not Ireland. This is the Point Reyes Seashore, a couple walking along the road an awe-inspiring landscape that brings together the land and the sea in a concoction sure to stimulate the senses. Broad, sweeping, rolling hills of green work their way to the craggy cliffs that signal the beginning of the Pacific Ocean. Best of all, this area is relatively untouched by man. Altogether there are 125 miles of trails and most times you won't be bothered by droves of other tourists.

A weekend away and a world apart might be a good way to summarize a getaway to the Pointe Reyes Seashore, a startling contrast with the metropolitan area that is so close to the south. In fact, once you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, or perhaps the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge coming from the East Bay area, there is a definite line of demarcation between city and country. Oh, there are cities up here all right ? but it's obvious this part of the Bay area was built up by people who wanted to leave the bustle of the city behind them when they retreated from a demanding day at the office.

One of the scenic ways to reach the Point Reyes Seashore is to cross on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and turn off on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, a slow, meandering two-lane road that weaves in between the forested hills and mountains of Marin County and other locales north of San Francisco. Once we exited onto Sir Francis Drake, we passed a bay full of ferryboats waiting to return to the city to bring commuters home for the evening. Then the road took us deeper into forests that we never realized were there.

If antiques are your passion, this Northern California vacation itinerary must include a stop in San Anselmo. More than 130 antique dealers are tucked into just a few blocks of this inviting small town where tree-lined streets and historic architecture suggest a quiet, simple life enhanced by the natural beauty of the forested hills and many nearby vistas.

A little further up the road is the Samuel P. Taylor State Park with its 2,700 acres of redwood forests and grassland. It's a quiet place to stop a boat lying on its side on landor a picnic. Enjoy the sounds of the babbling brook, the wind gently rustling the trees and the scenic splendor that made this the first park in California that was set aside specifically for city people to go visit.

Just about an hour's drive from the San Francisco Bay, we reached our base of operations while in the Point Reyes area ? the Point Reyes Seashore Lodge. While not actually on the seashore ? there are no lodgings on this part of the coast ? this comfortable country inn is located very close to the action. The Seashore area's Bear Valley Visitor Center is just a two-minute drive from the lodge, and the town of Point Reyes is only a little bit farther.

Even without the seashore nearby, the Point Reyes Seashore Lodge is an enchanting retreat of its own with its unique architecture ? kind of a cross between a Cape Cod mansion and a modern hunting lodge ? and its peaceful grounds. The lodge is located in the tiny town of Olema, where Sir Francis Drake meets Coastal Highway 1. There are a couple of restaurants in town and not much else, but our suite at the lodge offered a warm fire, plenty of reading materials and a gorgeous view from our balcony overlooking the lawns, walkways and streams that are all part of the inn's two-acre backyard.

After settling in, we took one look at the sunny weather and decided it was time to quickly make our way out to the far reaches of the Point Reyes Seashore ? about a 45-minute drive from the inn ? where we wanted to visit the famed Point Reyes Lighthouse. Weather in this part of California is a little tricky. Fog can come at any time of the year, although the tendency in winter is for it to be foggy in the interior, yet clear out on the coastline. In summer, that often is reversed.

During our winter visit, we enjoyed clear views all the way out to the Seashore as we drove along the "Irish" countryside, making our way ever closer to the spectacular cliffs leading to the sea. Along the two-lane country road, Point Reyes Lighthouse encountered several historic dairy farms that the National Park Service is allowing operators to maintain. Fascinating to us were the numbers of deer we were encountering throughout the area ? not just a deer or two, but clusters of them and all pretty tame.

Along the way to the lighthouse, we saw several signs for roads leading to the park's many beaches. We took a little side trip down to Drake's Beach where it is surprising to see, on this pristine beach, a National Park Service restaurant. This and other Point Reyes beaches are wilderness beaches that seem to put you in tune with Nature. An airplane could have you in San Francisco in 10 minutes ? but this felt like the other side of the world.

At the end of the road was the lighthouse, an easy?if slightly uphill?15-minute walk from where vehicles are parked. The lighthouse is way out on a cliff and, just beyond, there are miles and miles of open sea. From the Lighthouse Visitor Center it is a 308-step walk down to the lighthouse ? which is also 308 steps back up. Many visitors are content to enjoy the views from the observation area. On the day we were there, those views included several migrating whales that are easily visible with binoculars.

Near the lighthouse are several trails that take you out to breathtaking ledges where there the powerful sea washes onto the rocky coastline hundreds of feet below.

After a fair amount of exploring, we next drove our way back to the Bear Valley Visitor Center to get some maps and information for further exploration of the preserve. It soon became obvious that our quick overnight trip to Point Reyes would only scratch the surface of the natural attractions in this area. In the north part of the preserve, for example, you can find herds of elk. Or you can take a short walk from the Visitor Center up to Kule Loklo, a replica of a Coast Miwok Indian Village.

We took a little hike from the Visitor Center along the Earthquake Trail, where the path follows the San Andreas fault line. It's incredible when you see just how much the ground moved during the 1906 earthquake -- the two sections now are 20 feet apart.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Point Reyes National Seashore is just an hour's drive north of the San Francisco Bay area. It's easy to include in any Northern California vacation itinerary.

WHAT: The park is an expansive area that, for the most part, has been left untouched by man and offers a close-up look at the rugged natural beauty of the California coastline.

WHEN: Year-round. Temperatures in the area are moderate, although fog can develop. Always check for travel deals and vacation packages during the shoulder seasons. Last minute travel deals are sometimes possible, depending upon the lodging operator.

There are other attractions not too far away: Drive inland a ways and you'll start to come across several California wineries. Tourists would be interested to learn there is a private observatory in Mudgee, simply called the Mudgee Observatory. It has been in business for ten years and occasionally used by the University of NSW, the Sydney Observatory staff and the Sutherland Astronomical Society. The observatory is located 15 minutes west of Mudgee. Tourists can view the night skies the way they were supposed to be seen. A tour of Mudgee observatory can be entertaining and educational for all ages.

Literature buffs would probably like the Henry Lawson Centre. Henry Lawson was one of Australia's most prolific and well-known authors, his poetry still quoted to this day. The centre takes the visitor on a tour through the different phases of his life. People who want to learn some general history of Mudgee can visit the Mudgee Museum, which is located in an 1856 building, that was originally called the West End Hotel. This building has been lovingly recreated from the parlour to the bar and there is even charming doll display. Busses are welcome here.

Renting a home is a great, affordable option for a vacation, especially if you have a large family, or are traveling with a big group of friends. Just check online and you will see that you can rent a beautiful apartment or townhouse in the nicest parts of Manhattan for a week for $500/person (or less). Try finding a hotel room for that price! And staying in someone's home means you have the added advantage of more space (living room, kitchen, sometimes a garden, balcony or patio), something you pay dearly for at hotels in major cities. Below are some ideas to make your vacation even more affordable.

1. Travel off season. I understand that you don't want to be on a beach during a hurricane or snowstorm, but even going a little bit off peak times can save you quite a bit of money. On the French Riviera for example, you can find prices in October almost half of what they were in August. The weather is still great, and as an added benefit, the crowds are gone, and the locals are less stressed. Prices in restaurants and shops also tend to drop once the tourist season is over.

2. Travel to places where your currency is strong. A few years ago, the US dollar went a long way in Sweden. Not anymore: it's worth almost half today of what it was in 2002. Do your research and compare exchange rates. Some very attractive vacation areas where the dollar still is strong (in September 2008) are Argentina, South Africa, Vietnam, and everybody's eco-favorite, Costa Rica.

3. Look for last minute deals. If you are flexible with your time and can travel on short notice, last minute vacation rentals can be a great deal. I just did a quick Internet search and found an oceanfront mansion in the Florida Keys for $1,000 less/week than the normal rate.

4. Rent directly from the owner when possible. Since management companies charge owners to rent their properties (and the owner has to recoup that cost, which most often results in higher rental rates) you can get a cheaper rate by renting directly from the owner. I think it's nice to get a chance to talk to the person who actually owns the house, too.

5. Look for places where the inventory exceeds the demand. The building boom in the past few years combined with a slowing real estate market and economy has resulted in a lot of inventory, and the chance to negotiate a lower rate. Most owners would rather rent their vacation home out for a little bit less than not at all. In the US, Florida is the clear leader when it comes to the highest number of vacation homes, followed by California and New York.

Brazil comprises 8.5m square km, roughly 35 times the area of the UK. The largest country in South America and the fifth largest country in the world, it comprises a federation of 26 states, each having considerable autonomy.

Brazil has borders with Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also has a 7,500km Atlantic seaboard.

The massive River Amazon flows through the northern half of the country (the Amazon basin covers more than half of the country) and the impressive Parana through the south.

Rio de Janeiro is on the Atlantic coast to the south, as is Sao Paulo. Brazilia, the capital, is inland.

The country has a number of climatic zones ranging from the Amazon region where the temperature averages 27 Degrees C, to the dry north east where temperatures can exceed 40 Degrees C, and the south near Uruguay where average temperatures are 17 to 19 Degrees C.

Brazil's economy, the tenth largest in the world, grew by 3.7 per cent in 2006, up from 2.9 per cent in 2005, and is expected to grow by 4 per cent in 2007. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office says the country has a history of economic boom and bust, but that economic reforms in the 1990s have brought some stability to its finances. These reforms included the launch of a new currency (the Real) to tackle inflation, and a programme of privatisation.

'Brazil is a rapidly emerging global player of great importance to British interests - economic, political and commercial', according to the Foreign Office.

Most large industry is in the south and south east. The north east is the poorest region but is beginning to attract new investment. Overall Brazil is one of the most unequal societies in the world with 5 per cent of the population owning 85 per cent of its wealth.

The threat of terrorism in Brazil is rated as 'low' by the Foreign Office. However, 'there are frequent violent clashes between the Police and drug gangs in the slum areas of Rio de Janeiro. 'You should avoid these areas, remain alert and aware of local conditions at all times', says the FO. Also 'drug trafficking and use is widespread, with severe penalties in Brazil'.

Thefts from cars are common, and cases of car-jacking occur, sometimes with the occupants being taken and forced to withdraw money at cash machines. 'Avoid venturing out after dark in quiet streets except under reliable local advice', advises the FO. 'The threat of personal attack is lower outside the cities. However, incidents can occur anywhere, even in holiday destinations that appear relatively secure'.

It also says that credit card fraud is common 'and you should never lose sight of your cards'.

British nationals are normally admitted to Brazil without a visa as tourists or business visitors for an initial maximum stay of 90 days, although Brazilian immigration officials can exercise their right to give less than this. The Foreign Office advises visitors who wish to stay for longer to apply to the Federal Police for an extension in advance of the 90 day period. Those who overstay their visa entitlements are likely to be given 8 days notice to leave the country at their own expense and risk fines or deportation.

UK property investors may buy Brazilian property subject to some specific restrictions applying, for example, to islands and rural land. However, a pre-requisite is to obtain a Cadastro de Pessoa Fiasica - an official tax identification number issued by the Brazilian federal tax authorities and required for a range of formal transaction. Obtaining this can be longwinded and involves obtaining Portuguese translation of the applicant's birth certificate authenticated by the Brazilian consulate in the applicant's home country. However, some developers will assist buyers to obtain CPFs.

The property buying process is similar to others involving verification of documentation by a notary public. However, the process is assisted by a reliable national land registry containing details of title and charges. Even so, buyers are advised to appoint their own solicitors.

Mortgage finance is difficult if not impossible for overseas investor to obtain in Brazil and is expensive. Payment by instalments for new properties is also likely to be an expensive form of finance.

If funds are transferred to Brazil to pay for property this should be done via the Central Bank of Brazil as otherwise there may be problems later in repatriating amounts.

Arizona is listed in the US Constitution as one of the second last states to have been admitted to the United States of America. The state is also noted for having one of the highest concentrations of Native Americans along with Oklahoma and California.

La Conner is Washington State Jewel on the Water

Most people rave about Seattle and its beauty, but venture a little further north and the picture postcard settings get even better. Northwest Washington has to be one of the prettiest places on earth.

In Northwest Washington, the mountains, the sea, the farmlands, the islands all come together in a breathtaking mosaic of colors and terrain, a feast for the senses that is evident in every direction you look. It's no wonder that many people who live up here are actually part of the Puget Sound workforce, shuttling back and forth from their Seattle-area jobs but figuring it's well worth the hours spent in the car each day if they can live where every time they look out their window or walk down the street, the scenery is as spectacular as a painting.

About half way between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. is the tiny village of La Conner, a short drive from the interstate and lightyears way from city hustle and bustle. If you're driving straight through to Seattle or Vancouver, this is one of those gems you will miss unless you know it's there.

La Conner is just a small town, an enclave built on the banks of the Swinomish Channel. The channel gives La Conner much of its color and atmosphere, a distinct seaside ambiance that comes from watching the fishing boats and pleasure craft navigating the channel toward Anacortes and then out to the world-famous San Juan Islands. The Rainbow Bridge is the Golden Gate of La Conner, standing like a sentinel over the town and a must-inclusion in any respectable photograph of the city.

With its historic buildings, a colorful downtown assortment of channel-front restaurants and intriguing shops, La Conner is a prime destination for the stroller - i.e. the person who just likes to stroll casually through town, soaking up the saltwater scents and sounds as seabirds sweep overhead or visitors enjoy good conversation and a drink out by the channel. It also will come as no surprise that the local aesthetics are a big attraction for artists of every type including famous residents such as author Tom Robbins.

The best way to savor the town is to spend a little time in La Conner - day trips are nice, but an overnight lets you unwind and start doing things on "La Conner time." Things just seem to move a little slower in the village, and we found the La Conner Channel Lodge to be tailor-made for this kind of outing. As the name implies, the lodge is right on the channel and offers great views of the Rainbow Bridge and the frequent boat traffic on the channel.

When they designed the La Conner Channel Lodge, they went with a Cape Code type of shingle exterior that fits the location perfectly. Inside, the units are quite unique and unusual in the way that they are not just rectangular but of varying lengths and widths with distinct rooms and angles. In our room a fireplace with two stuffed chairs and a table were positioned at an angle, while across the room a bench seat was built into the wall. There was plenty of room for a king bed and a window nearby that looked out onto the channel. A small lanai allowed us to sit outside and watch the slow-cruising boats that seemed only a few yards away.

Another big plus at the La Conner Channel Lodge was the bathroom area which offered a Jacuzzi style tub stylishly situated in a room that used dark and gray marble and tiles, as well as dark wood accents to give the room a luxurious look and feel that helped make this getaway seem extra-special.

La Conner's history is evident in the buildings downtown and the historic homes that are located throughout the residential areas. With just 900 residents, the town is small and visitors can walk the neighborhoods and, because of the town's hills, get some good exercise doing it. At the top of one hill is the Skagit County Historical Museum, which has many reminders of the city's past including American baskets, Shirley Temple dolls and a rich collection of historical documents and photographs.

One of La Conner's most historic buildings is the Gaches Mansion, which was constructed in 1891 by George and Louisa Gaches as their residence. Over the years, the mansion changed hands several times until it was opened to the public as the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum in 1997. The first floor of the museum is decorated in Victorian era furnishings, while you'll find the main exhibition space on the second and third floors. The museum offers new exhibits about every eight weeks, and features quilts and quilters from around the world - in fact this is one of only 12 such museums in the world.

La Conner also is a good base of operations for short drives to many scenic locations in the general area. For example, about 15 miles to the west is Deception Pass State Park, a 4,134-acre marine and camping park with considerable shoreline, both freshwater and saltwater. With its rugged cliffs and famous bridge, Deception Pass is a favorite destination for locals. The old-growth forest and shoreline offer spectacular views.

Just to the southeast of La Conner is the 13,000-acre Skagit Wildlife Area, which is primarily tidelands and intertidal marsh habitat. Visitors can view 180 species of birds, including bald eagles, golden eagles, and osprey. Also seen in the area are coyote, raccoon, opossum, skunk, beaver and muskrat in addition to many other species. Local residents use the Wildlife area for hiking, birdwatching, photography and canoeing. There are six developed access sites and 12 footbridges in this low-lying area.

Larrabee State Park, in the Bellingham area, is an easy drive north from La Conner and features 2,683 acres with a scenice saltwater shoreline on Samish Bay. The park features two freshwater lakes as well as tidelands and coves.

La Conner is a fun and picturesque destination any time of year, but perhaps the most beautiful time to visit is in April when the area comes alive with the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Acres and acres of daffodils, tulips, irises, and lilies are on display at this special time of the year. All the action begins in mid-March or so when the daffodils are in full bloom. It continues through mid-May. Events include a big street fair, parade, quilt walk and many other festivities both in La Conner and in nearby Mount Vernon.
